Personal Care Products

Numerous personal care products are loaded with toxic chemicals like parabens, propylene glycol, aluminum, and triclosan.  This page will provide information and links that will discuss why these chemicals are harmful and offer information on safer alternatives.

Environmental Working Group (EWG.org) is one of the most informative sites in regard to the types of chemicals in personal care products. You can look up any product and discover what ingredients are present and also the toxicity level.

Each year, the Environmental Working Group conducts studies on toxic ingredients in sunscreen.  Here is a link to their 2012 PDF:

NATURAL & HOMEMADE PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS

1. Deodorant: Many deodorants contain toxic ingredients such as aluminum and propylene glycol.  Below is an easy recipe for homemade deodorant.
Homemade Deodorant: 3 parts corn starch and 1 part baking soda.
NOTE: It is best to use organic  corn starch as much of the corn is genetically modified (GM).  Also, you want to use a brand of baking soda that does not have an aluminum base.
Arrowroot powder may even work better than cornstarch if you have access to it.

2. Toothpaste:  JUST BAKING SODA (that does not use an aluminum base).

3.  Lotion:  Just oil!  Just after a shower, while your skin is damp, a small dab of coconut oil (my favorite), olive oil, or Jojoba oil will go a long way.   You want to stay away from mineral oil or baby oil because it is made with a petroleum base.

4. Mosquito Repellant: See number 3.  ANY oil will work.  Mosquitoes do not like oil-coated skin.

5.  Lice problem?  rinse your hair with distilled white vinegar!
